  • One Year of `PLUS` Already (Almost...)

It's been almost a year since Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS) introduced ApolytonPLUS, a subscription service allowing registered users of ACS' forums to enhance their browsing experience with perks not available to non-subscribers. This service brought together a long-standing call by visitors wanting to directly support ACS' operations, and the position of the ACS administration not to institute a donation mechanism. As when it began nearly twelve months ago, subscription bonuses constitute mostly expansions to existing features. Access to ACS content has and continues to not be restricted in whole or in part as a result of PLUS' implementation -- content consumption remains free for subscribers and non-subscribers.

Those who from the outset subscribed to the 'Standard' plan of six-months of services have already faced the decision whether or not to re-subscribe. Since then a trial one-month, two-month and formal 'Mini' three-month plan has been introduced based on user demand. 'Lifetime' subscriptions have also been available from the beginning, and remain so today where renewal is not applicable. However, for those who were among the first to subscribe to PLUS' 'Extended' service should note that their subscription period is winding down and will soon lapse without their commitment to renew.

Over the 2004-05 year in question, we at ACS have continued to receive and respond to feedback on how to improve PLUS by adding more of what has worked, eliminated or revised what has not and incorporated new ideas altogether. To our existing PLUS subscribers, we trust that your direct financial investment in this site has been and continues to be well worth the dividends. We hope that those affected 'Extended' users will renew and those with shorter service periods have or will do the same, or even upgrade to longer service periods, in the near future. For those who have let ther PLUS service lapse, we want to hear from you as to why you are no longer a subscriber and what if anything we at ACS can do to bring you back as a PLUS member of the Apolyton community.

Finally, for those who have yet to try PLUS and a regular or semi-regular visitor to the site -- please consider doing so. While the online advertising industry continues to recover somewhat from its early 2001 fallout, its level has not nor is it expected to reach its previous heights. In 2004, we at ACS decided to structure a subscription service to supplement the site's advertising and affiliation revenue. Help us help you to Keep On Civ'in!

    Yours truly,

Yes, a nice financial report would be great. I'd like to see how the site is progressing.

Oh yeah, by the way, I just re-upped. Thanks to everyone on the Apolyton team. This is a great site.

Several people, mainly myself and Skanky (who raises your ire so much) pushed for it over a long period, including the final stages where Mark actually set it up. I doubt we were the first, but we were the most consistent.

Congrats to the owners for finding a way to generate the revenue they need to maintain the site, while still keeping it free for anybody.
                    Keep on Civin'

What Ming said. How has the take rate been. I would like to pay for a membership, but keep my plebian status. Is that possible? I'll just make a donation. Even if I never come back again, the site gave me so much in the past. In the late 90s.

Thank you to everyone with their kind words and affirmations of ongoing financial support so far.

There is no public report to give on Apolyton's financial status, but I can make a statement to this effect: over the past twelve months, this site's operating costs have been covered month-to-month thanks to advertising revenue, affiliation revenue (I include our store in this category) and PLUS subscriptions. This trend is projected to continue into at least the immediate future. Thank you one and all!

The last time I reported on the number of PLUS subscribers I believe was back in early April 2004 when it was at 37. That number is now 109, and we hope that membership will continue to grow in the coming year. If, like TCO you would like to pay for a PLUS subscription but not keep the benefits for yourself, consider purchasing a gift subscription for a fellow forum user.

BTW, Dan, you seem slightly less verbose/pompous although more work is still needed.

There are four levels of PLUS membership: 'Mini' ($6USD), 'Standard' ($12USD), 'Extended' ($18USD) and 'Lifetime' (price varies based on forum registration date).

                              See http://apolyton.net/plus for more details.

Why thank you -- I am always trying to better myself. And you seem slightly less irritating/grating, although more work is still needed.
